Robert Pinsky, former Poet Laureate of the United States, came to Mississippi this past week to do a reading of some of his works at Millsaps College in Jackson. The Holmes Goodman Campus’ Creative Writing class attended with their teacher, Chad Moorer.

According to poetryfoundation.org, Pinsky is “often called the last of the ‘civic’ or public poets, Pinsky’s criticism and verse reflect his concern for a contemporary poetic diction that nonetheless speaks of a wider experience.”

The students who attended were Chris Kalil, Ethan Burton, Liz Howell, and Rachel Jones. Poems read included “Shirt,” “Samurai Song,” “Rhyme” and “An Old Man.”

“He’s fantastic,” said Chris when asked about the event. “Listening to him both makes me want to write and makes me want to give up and change my major. I’m never going to reach that level.”

The Creative Writing class attends multiple events such as this one; therefore, attending this reading was “a no-brainer,” as one attendee said.

“The last time he was in Mississippi was 18 years ago,” said Moorer. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Students interested in joining Creative Writing next semester can contact Moorer at wmoorer@holmescc.edu. His office is in room 24A, upstairs in McDaniel Hall.
