The Mississippi State Fair has been around for generations, coming to Jackson every October. From 1858 to 2024, the state fair had over 600,000 people in attendance each year. Although the fair is full of screams of joy, the food and trickster games are always a delight. Many food trucks gather around each year to please and service people all over the state and feel the air with love and laughter.
“To know that our food has been the reason people come to the fair is a blessing,” said Romeo Santos, the owner of Green Ghost Tacos. “ This food truck has always been a part of my family and my culture. In these four years of being at the state fair, our love for it grows fonder and fonder.”
As much as people go to the fair for the food, daring rides and tricky games, people also go to be together. The fair is a tradition for some, and an everyday memory for others. The fair brings people together while bringing joy, smiles and laughter from morning to night.
“ I met my wife at the fair and we were together for 45 years,”said Marcus Barnes, a restaurant owner of downtown Jackson. “We went every year and when we had our girls, we sometimes went twice. After she passed, I couldn’t bring myself to go anymore but my daughters went on and lived that legacy as if she were still here. They never forget to bring me two cotton candies.”
To some, the fair is games, rides and food, but to others it is something a little bit sweeter. The Mississippi State Fair always seems to bring out the love, joy and community that most people need. So when the temperature drops, the fall time hits and October’s around the corner, another year of sweet memories are back to experience once again.
