2024 was a monumental year for women in music- dominating men in charts, reviews and awards alike, and JENNIE and Doechii intend to ride that wave into 2025 as well. On this new single we can clearly hear the punchy dance beats prevalent in the discography of many K-pop groups such as JENNIE’s own group, BLACKPINK. There’s somewhat of a spectrum with this sound from more melodic to punchier, with the most effective and memorable songs being punchier. And this single packs quite the punch.
With the current dominance of women in music, it’s expected that female empowerment anthems make a comeback from their previous peak in the mid-2010’s. The song kicks off with the echoing chant, “Do my, do my ladies run this, ladies run this?” Followed by biting lyrics such as “You sit too far down on ’em charts to even ask me who’s in charge,” and after a strong chorus that properly pumps you up, JENNIE clears the way for her guest on this track, Doechii. We hear the music cut out as Doechii’s repetition of “Wait… Wait…” grinds against the “Do my, do my ladies run this, ladies run this?” like a serrated edge, bringing a raw texture to the usually polished K-pop sound, followed by a flurry of intoxicating rapping. When JENNIE and Doechii unite after this second verse is when this track becomes something worthy of mention among the growing genre K-pop and hip-hop fusion.
This track feels like a particularly well-timed release for both artists; JENNIE has found immense success outside of BLACKPINK and has truly been able to prove herself as an independent artist worthy of praise and Doechii has recently come off her win at the Grammys, making her the third woman in history to win best rap album. As these two women tear their way through the music industry, this is the perfect song to play over their rise to power.
