Alek Dickerson is a sophomore at Holmes Community College. She is from Biloxi but moved to Ridgeland in 2017. She is very into her culture because she is the daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and a Jamaican father. When deciding on a major, she originally wanted to do criminology because her Abuelo (grandfather) was a lawyer/attorney, but then realized that she would not enjoy it and it didn’t fit her personality. She then started job shadowing professionals in careers that would probably fit her personality like being a teacher, an interior designer, a fashion designer, etc. When realizing she would not enjoy those things either, some authorities introduced her to public relations. Careers like a news reporter, full-service event planner, flight attendant, really interested her and fit her personality. Because the Ridgeland campus does not have a public relations major, she is majoring in journalism/mass communications. She plans to transfer to Ole Miss and obtain a career in journalism or event planning. Outside of school, she loves to interact with friends and family, create anything with her hands, and take chances to explore her options on what she can do and participate in events around her.
