This Monday, Feb. 3 about 100 Biloxi residents showed up to protest against immigration enforcement. “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here” was chanted by the protesters. Among them was Alma Leon, who organized the protest by spreading the message on social media. She was joined by her teenage children who were proud of their mother for speaking up.
Though many were scared to support, the turnout was greater than they expected and Leon and her children were emotional to see the community together in protest. Those that were driving by honked their horns in a show of support. The protest went on for hours, until after sundown. There is another protest being planned for Feb. 8.
Many people around the nation have come together to protest immigration enforcement, as it gets more popular today. They come together to be the voice of those who are in fear and challenge policies that are unjust and discriminatory. By protesting, these people are bringing awareness to the harm being done to vulnerable communities, pressuring policymakers to adopt fairer immigration policies and stand in solidarity for those affected, advocating for a system that values diversity, dignity and equal opportunities for everyone.
